The First Rule by Robert Crais

My reading tends to be focused on non-fiction and hardboiled mystery novels. I just finished the First Rule by Robert Crais. Most of his other novels focused on Elvis Cole, the self-proclaimed (tongue in cheek) "world's greatest detective." The First Rule's main character is Joe Pike, Elvis' sidekick. Pike is a laconic ex-mercenary devoted to protecting the innocent,no matter what it takes. The First Rule is about Pike hunting down the killer of one of Joe's "guys," a former comrade in arms who had retreated to the life of a quiet family man in Southern California. There are enough twists to keep the reader guessing and enough violence to keep the adrenaline flowing. If you like the suspense/mystery/detective genre, read it. Highly recommended.
