It Was Only a Matter of Time

Saturday's (October 27th) NY Times had an interesting article on the battle between public school systems and the parents of disabled kids. Most of the article seemed to focus on families with autistic children in metro NYC schools. When property values stagnate or (gasp!) decline, school budgets are reexamined and the cost of private school educations for these disabled kids comes under tighter scrutiny. As a dad who has a kid who has grappled with social challenges, I wasn't surprised. Everyone is in favor of helping kids with disabilities until the help hurts their pocketbook or creates inconvenience for their own families. In years to come, I think a bigger push is going to be met with a harder shove when it comes to some of these issues. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/27/education/27specialed.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
